Healthy Kid Snacks for Nutrition Month – gracey – Morgue FileFruit and vegetable snack idea list and tips for having healthy snacks at hom
Celebrate National Nutrition Month with healthy fruit and vegetable snack ideas for kids. It is so easy to have junk food snacks on hand for the kids to grab and go but it is just as easy to supply them with healthy snacks. This is a celebration that can begin in March but last a lifetime.
Leave Junk Food At The Store
Don’t put any junk food items on your grocery list and they will not make it into your grocery cart. This will easily cut out the unhealthy snacking that goes on in your home. Replace the snacks that you would have purchased with healthy choices of fruits and vegetables.
Put Snacks Where Kids Can Find Them
Have a special spot where you can put the snacks that are easy for the kids to get to. If you buy in bulk go ahead and put the serving size amounts in zipper bags or individual serving size cups with lids. Have all the vegetables and fruits washed and sliced for the kids to grab and eat.
A shelf in a lower cabinet is great to make a “Snack Shelf” and have the snacks ready as well as plastic glasses and bowls so the kids that are old enough can fix the snack their self instead of waiting for you to fix it for them. Be sure and put a limit on the snacks even if they are healthy. If you find that the kids are getting into the snack shelf too often you may need to rethink this idea.
Fruit Snack Ideas
Fruit choices are easier to get the kids to eat than the vegetable choices because of the sweetness. Some fruits to choose from are apples, grapes, bananas, cherries, strawberries, oranges, tangerines, watermelon, cantaloupe, peaches, pineapple, honey dew melon, kiwi and pears.
The apples and pears can be peeled or served with the peeling on and sliced up. The oranges and tangerines will need to be peeled by you and cut or torn into sections. Peeling citrus fruit is hard for children to do so they will need your help.
Grapes can be served fresh or frozen and bananas can be peeled and mashed up and then put in the freezer until slightly frozen. Serve the bananas as a special frozen treat on a hot day.
These fruit ideas can be fresh or dried. The dried fruit is great to keep in your bag or car for those times when the children need a snack while away from home. The fruit is already dried so you don’t have to worry about it going bad.
Vegetable Snack Ideas
Some vegetables that can be eaten raw and served as snacks are carrots, cucumbers, tomatoes, celery, cauliflower and radishes. These healthy snacks can be washed, cut up and served with an easy to make vegetable dip. The celery can also be cut into strips and served with peanut butter and raisins. Cream cheese could also be used in the celery sticks instead of the peanut butter.
